Release
NY Book Publishing Giant to be
Represented at
Black Writers Conference
Simon and Schuster imprint to share stage with
vanity & small
presses
Los
Angeles, CA, July 17, 2004:
For
those "closet writers" who've secretly longed to have millions, rather
than hundreds or thousands, read their novels or treatises, International
Black Writers & Artists Los Angeles is bringing Simon & Schuster editor
Cherise Davis, all the way from the country's book publishing capital to
help turn those dreams into reality. Davis will appear along with three
local publishers during the group's 30th Anniversary Celebration Saturday,
August 14 in the Exposition Park Intergenerational Community Center's
Community Hall, at 3980 S. Menlo Avenue in Los Angeles.
The publishers'
roundtable is just one of the many features of the event that readers,
writers and artists are sure to find enlightening, inspiring and
entertaining, according to IBWALA board member and event coordinator Linda
Hughes.
"In the Publishers
Roundtable, we wanted to offer a well-rounded view representing several
options for the writer or artist seeking to be published. So we invited
four different entities. I felt it was imperative to have one of "the big
boys" represented because vanity and small presses don't address every
need or aspiration," Hughes said.
Davis, a Senior Editor
at Touchstone Fireside, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, will help prove
and break some of the myths surrounding mainstream publishers and aspiring
black writers and will share a 90-minute panel with Dr. Rosie Milligan of
Milligan Books and the famed Black Writers on Tour; Maxine Thompson of
Black Butterfly Press, and Denise Pines of the (Tavis) Smiley Group.
Davis has
built a strong list of fiction and non-fiction titles covering a broad
spectrum of topics (spirituality, relationships, business, career
development, parenting, health, pop reference, pop/youth/hip hop culture,
humor, American history, illustrated books and strong African American
fiction). She has worked with authors Michael Baisden, Nelson George,
Stedman Graham, Paule Marshall, Charles Johnson, Henry Louis Gates, Jr.,
Cornel West.
Other headliners during
the three-day celebration, which runs August 12-14, are New York Times
bestseller Eric Jerome Dickey and 94.7 the Wave's Pat Prescott who will
emcee the awards dinner dance honoring winners of a recent poetry and
short fiction writing competition.
"There will be something
for everyone," said Hughes.
Additional panels,
workshops, discussion groups, book signings, a wellness pavilion featuring
massage and health information, as well as a spoken word slam and special
youth workshop led by Def Poetry Jam alumnus "Poetri" highlight the
weekend of activities.
General admission to
exhibits and some workshops are free and open to the public, but
pre-registration is recommended. For further information, log onto
